In
feudal times in Japan, there were various military arts and exercises which the
samurai classes were trained and fitted for their special form of warfare.
Amongst these was the art of jujutsu.....
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the latest Extreme Sport to hit
our shores, it is a blend of different martial arts imalgamated to create the
ultimate in combat athletics, a great way to relax and bust stress in an
invigorationg and dynamic Atmosphere.
Why should you train in MMA?
By training in MMA you will feel stronger and fitter, you
will greatly improve your cardivascular fitness along with strengthining and
toning your muscles. It can aid you in your battle to lose weight and turbo
charge your confidence. Along with all these benefits MMA is a great form of
self defence. There is absolutly no requisite to compete, so should you be the
casual fitness seeker or the next Tito Ortiz, MMA has the perfect training
environment in which you can excel. A fun buzz workout that you have to feel to
believe.
Why MMA not some other Martial Art?
A question frequently asked by the newcomer, Why should i
learn MMA and not some other traditional martial art such as Karate, Tae Kwon
Do or Judo?
Well the answer is quite simple. All of these so called
combat systems are one-dimensional. Karate, Tae Kwon Do and such are primarily
stand up arts that will teach you how to strike an opponent, but they lack
takedowns and ground fighting. On the other hand we have Judo, or wrestling.
Again one dimensional, they are great to teach you how to throw or takedown
your opponent and grapple with them but they lack the striking aspect of the
fight game.
It has been historically documented that traditional martial
arts where developed to fend of attackers and to be honest most of them (if
trained correctly) do as promised given their set of rules. A Karateka will do
great in a Karate Dojo fighting against people of his own style, but throw him
on the ground with a Brazillian Ju Jitsu player and watch his face as he gets
the life chocked out of him.
Bearing this in mind, we never know what our attacker wants
to do, we never know what he is willing to do to us. So is it not to our
benefit to be ready for any predicament? Is it not to our benefit to be able to
fight and fight well under any if not no set of rules? The old style martial
arts schools will show you exactly how and what their art can do. But ask them
if their art has ever been proven outside the gym and the majority will respond
with either no or not for thousands of years.
The reality of the matter is that NHB/MMA style training and
competition is the closest that anybody is going to get to pressure testing
their art in a street situation. In MMA you are constantly learning your trade
against uncooprative opponents who will resist your techniques in a live and
uncontrolled manner. They will not stand still and allow you to perform a
sequence of techniques that look flashy and cool but would never work in a real
situation. They wil not punch and leave their arm extended to have umpteen arm
locks applied to them as they stand there and watch. This type of training in
unreal and dead. In an environment where there are minimal rules, in an
environment where all ranges of combat are explored equally, in an evrionment
that is alive and uncooperative lies the secret to effective self defence.
So to answer the question, Why MMA?
Well...pure and simple, because it makes sense.
What will you learn in MMA?
The MMA class syllabus teaches you to fight in all ranges of
combat.
Stand-Up: this is where you will learn to fight and defend
yourself on your feet. You will learn techniques such as kicking and punching.
Clinch: here you and your opponent literally
"Clinch", you will learn how to tie up your opponents arms, how to
deliver knees, elbows aswell as throws and takedowns.
Groundwork: as the name suggests this is when the fight goes
to the ground, you will learn how to get back up on your feet, you will learn
how to controll your opponent on the ground aswell as some excruciatingly
painful chokes and submissions.
